Common Questions About Countertop Refinishing in Syracuse

Will a countertop paint kit work as well as professional refinishing?

Kits can give a decent result on a low-traffic counter, but durability depends almost entirely on preparation and the coating. Most failures come from surfaces that weren't thoroughly degreased, sanded and primed, from thin coats, or from using the counter before the finish fully cures. Professional refinishing typically uses spray-applied, commercial-grade coatings, repairs chips and burns first, and controls dust and curing conditions. In Syracuse's older homes — about 85% were built before 1980 (U.S. Census ACS 2024) — counters are often original laminate or tile, so surface repair is a bigger share of the job.

Can cracks in a cultured marble sink be repaired?

Often, yes. Fine spider-web cracks around the drain, called crazing, usually come from repeated hot water hitting the bowl, and they can typically be filled and refinished so the surface looks uniform again. Larger cracks that go through the material, or a bowl that leaks, are harder: a refinisher can sometimes repair them, but replacement may be the more reliable option. Running cooler water into the bowl and avoiding very hot water helps prevent new crazing after a repair.
